The L Magazine will host four reading events for this year’s Literary Upstart writing contest.
You can submit your short fiction until May 28th; submissions must be no longer than 1,300-words. The grand prize winner will get a $500 award and be published in the annual Summer Fiction Issue.
The top writers will be invited to one of three semi-final round readings on April 17th, May 1st or May 22nd. All the contestants who place first in the semi-final rounds will move on to perform one more time at the grand finale reading on June 4th.
The judges presiding over the first event include The New Yorker editor Ben Greenman, Harper Perennial editorial director Cal Morgan, Curtis Brown literary agent Katherine Fausset, and Slaughterhouse 90210 blogger Maris Kreizman. Head over to the powerHouse Arena in Brooklyn, NY to join the fun!
Here’s more about the contest: “Now in its ninth year, [Literary] Upstart invites and receives hundreds (usually 300-500 per year) previously unpublished short stories from New York writers, and has been proud to showcase some of the city’s best unknown writers…Following the readings, and our infamous New York City Literary Trivia competition (‘Where overpriced education meets underpriced alcohol’), the judges will hold forth, American Idol-style, on the readers and their stories, and declare a winner.”
