Pulse Nightclub Survivor Writes a Poem About Her Experience

By Maryann Yin

How do you deal with moments of tragedy? USA Today reports that Patience Carter, one of the victims of the Pulse nightclub attack, decided to move forward with her healing by writing.

According to The Washington Post, Carter wrote a poem and read it out loud for reporters while recovering in a Florida hospital. The video embedded above features her recitation. Here’s an excerpt from her piece:

I never thought in a million years that this could happen.
I never thought in a million years that my eyes could witness something so tragic.
Looking at the souls leaving the bodies of individuals, looking at the killer’s machine gun throughout my right peripheral.
