Michigan Couple Faces Jail Time for Overdue Library Books

By Dianna Dilworth

A couple in Michigan could go to jail for not returning two overdue library books.

Catherine Duren was charged for failing to return A Hatful of Seuss which she checked out in 2014 and then lost. Her husband faces charges for checking out The Rome Prophecy by Michael Morley and keeping it for more than eight months.  The Daily News has more:

Melvin returned the book under his name after receiving a letter in December demanding its return and telling him and his wife that they would be charged with a misdemeanor for making the thriller and the children’s book part of their private collection.

However, because the case went from the library to the legal system, they face up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.
