KCRW to Run Storytelling Contest

By Dianna Dilworth

Santa Monica-based radio station KCRW is about to kick off its Radio Race, a 24-hour nonfiction radio writing competition.

On Saturday, August 8 at 10 a.m. PT, the station will email a theme to contestants and participants have 24 hours to create a story that relates to the theme. (Stories can run up to four minutes. Participants must upload their completed piece to Soundcloud by Sunday August 9 at 10 a.m. PT for judging.)

Three winners will be selected. All winners will receive a cash prize for their work to air on KCRW’s UnFictional in addition to other prizes. Here is more about the rules from KCRW:

All creativity – writing, editing, and mixing the piece – must occur within the 24 hour period defined above. Please do not repurpose a piece that you have already produced. Archival tape is permitted, but special consideration will be given to teams who record the majority of their actuality sound on race day.
