James Patterson 200 (GalleyCat)The American Association of School Librarians has named James Patterson as the recipient of the 2016 Crystal Apple. This award honors an individual or group who has devoted significant effort in advocating for school library programs.

Patterson, a prolific author who writes for both adults and children, has become well-known for his philanthropic efforts. In 2015, he donated $1.75 million in grants to 467 schools. He recently announced plans to give away another $1.75 million for school libraries this year.

Patterson had this statement in the press release: “My aim in supporting school libraries is simple. I want to make books available to all kids, in every neighborhood across the country. And once we get kids reading, my hope is that we’ll turn them into lifelong readers. Supporting libraries, which are the heart of every school, is a great place to start.”
