Irish Censorship Board Bans First Book in 18 Years

The Censorship of Publications Board of Ireland has banned The Raped Little Runaway by Jean Martin.

The book was banned for containing a number of graphic scenes in which a child is raped. Under the restriction, the book cannot be published or sold in Ireland. The Independent has more:

Board chairman Shane McCarthy said the decision was unanimous among the five board members.”It was the only resort,” said Mr McCarthy. “We either ban it or allow it. It isn’t like a film where you can put in an age restriction. It is black or white.”

According to the censor board’s website, “Books are prohibited if the Censorship of Publications Board considers them to be indecent or obscene. Periodicals are prohibited if the Censorship of Publications Board considers them to be frequently or usually indecent or obscene.” The last time a book was banned by the organization was in 1998.
