Iranian Author Jailed for Unpublished Story on Stoning

Iranian author Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee has been sentenced to prison for writing a work of fiction which details how stoning works in her country.

The author received a six-year sentence for writing the work which has yet to be published. Here sentence is broken up into five years for insulting Islamic sanctities and an extra year was handed out for spreading propaganda. Her husband, Arash Sadeghi, is currently serving a 19-year sentence at the same prison. Authorities discovered the story while searching their home. The Guardian has the scoop:

“The charges against Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee are ludicrous,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty’s research director for its Middle East and North Africa programme.

“She is facing years behind bars simply for writing a story, and one which was not even published – she is effectively being punished for using her imagination.”
