Gay Fairy Tale Creates Controversy in Third Grade Class

kingandkingA teacher in North Carolina is standing up to a new school policy after his reading of a gay-themed fairy tale to students in his third grade classroom sparked controversy.

The 25 year-old teacher Omar Currie read King & King by Linda De Haan and Stern Nijland in class after one of his students was picked on and accused another student of being gay, as though it were a derogatory thing. Some parents complained about the book. While a committee that met to address the complaint upheld Currie’s ability to teach the book, the school has implemented a new policy which makes it somewhat cumbersome to introduce new texts.

The policy requires “teachers to notify parents of all the books they plan to read in class and to fill out a form for every bullying incident,” reports The News & Observer.
