David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the co-creators and showrunners behind Game of Thrones, have been pondering on how to conclude the popular HBO series. In an interview with Variety, Benioff and Weiss shared that they may only shoot 7 episodes for season seven and 6 episodes for the eighth (and possibly concluding) season.
Here’s more from Variety: “Sources later clarified those exact numbers were premature, given that the showrunners are now just beginning to outline their plans, but said that any upcoming seasons may be shorter than the full 10 episodes of seasons past. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo acknowledged the showrunners’ plan to wind down the series with two more years.”
For those who may not be ready to say goodbye to Game of Thrones, rumors have been circulating that spinoff shows may be coming in the future. Lombardo recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly and acknowledged that George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series features a rich world and history, but he also confirmed that at this point in time the team does not have plans for any spinoff projects.
