Emma Watson’s Feminist Book Club to Read Persepolis

By Maryann Yin

Complete Persepolis (GalleyCat)Emma Watson has named Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi as the June 2016 pick for Our Shared Shelf. Satrapi’s autobiographical graphic novel was originally published in France; Pantheon published an English translation omnibus (which contains all four installments) in 2007.

Here’s an excerpt from Watson’s announcement on Goodreads: “As Iran enters another important period of change, with relations re-opening with much of the world, I think this is a particularly good time to pick up Persepolis. Satrapi’s deceptively simple, almost whimsical drawings belie the seriousness and rich complexity of her story–but it’s also very funny too.”

In the past, this feminist book club has read My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem, How To Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran, and The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson. What books would you recommend to Watson for future selections?
