Vocativ Snags Jezebel's Jessica Coen

Some big news on this Friday afternoon. Vocativ has appointed Jezebel editor at large Jessica Coen (pictured) as its new editorial director. Coen will be tasked with expanding the site's reach into culture, entertainment and sports. She starts Nov. 2. Here's the internal memo from Vocativ founder Mati Kochavi: Hello everyone, We’ve been having a great year, seeing success in our strategy of using our proprietary technology for storytelling, created for the social web. We’ve had wonderful achievements using our technology in the area of news, breaking exclusive stories like “Paris Terrorist Pledged Allegiance to ISIS” and “Mother Of Boston Bomber Says US Will Burn.” These stories are proof points that our technology is a credible source in a very crowded category. We will now use our amazing technology and the data insights it provides to expand beyond news, covering the areas of entertainment, culture and sports as well as building out our branded content offering. With this expansion, I am very happy to introduce an incredible talent joining our growing team: Jessica Coen is joining Vocativ as Editorial Director in charge of launching and running our big expansion into culture, entertainment and sports coverage. Jessica comes to us from Jezebel where she was editor-in-chief for more than four years and is now editor-at-large. She will bring to our newsroom a fearless editorial vision, unmatched creativity, and a decade’s worth of experience editing and writing online. Jessica will build an ambitious team that explores the topics we love. Capitalizing on Vocativ’s proprietary technology and data expertise, we’ll dig deeper into the zeitgeist. We’ll broaden the reach of our general interest reporting and obsess about the experiences, events and interests that connect us. She will report directly to [chief content officer] Greg [Gittrich]. As Jezebel’s editor-in-chief, Jessica was responsible for guiding its bold vision and headline-making agenda. Under her leadership the site’s audience quadrupled. Prior to that, she was the managing editor at nymag.com, where she oversaw editorial across the site’s news, entertainment, fashion and food blogs. She was instrumental in launching The Cut and helped New York magazine win the National Magazine Award for general excellence online. Earlier in her career, Jessica was deputy editor of Vanity Fair’s website and editor-in-chief of Gawker. She’s also a contributing editor at Marie Clare and her work has appeared in Bloomberg Businessweek, The New York Times, Elle, Mental Floss, Glamour and The New York Observer.
