Study: 78% of Big Papers Use Digital Subscription Model

Journalism costs money.

According to a new report by the American Press Institute, the nation’s biggest newspapers are all in on digital subscriptions. The study found that of the 98 newspapers with a circulation of 50,000 or more, 77 of them use some sort of paywall.

The metered paywall—like the one used by The New York Times—is the number one method to charge digital readers, with 63 percent of papers opting for this system. Interestingly, the bigger the paper, the less likely it is to use a paywall.
