Newsweek Drops Paywall

A curious decision.

Screen Shot 2016-02-10 at 9.28.07 AMIn an odd move, IBT Media’s Newsweek has decided to tear down its paywall. Before today, Newsweek.com had a metered paywall — non-subscribers got five free articles per month before being asked to pay up.

Newsweek will continue to make some content exclusive to digital subscribers, but after a certain period, it’ll all be available to everyone.

The idea, essentially, is to get more eyeballs on Newsweek.com and hope that with more content available, more people turn into subscribers.

“The general strategy is to open up and allow folks the ability to experience and really enjoy the journalism that’s happening on Newsweek,” IBT Media CMO Mitchell Caplan told Ad Age.
