Zinio to Debut All-Digital Online Newsstand for College Market

ZinioNatGeoTraveler.jpgDigital publisher Zinio is hitting the books, teaming up with National Association of College Stores subsidiary NACS Media Solutions (NMS) to develop an all-digital online newsstand for the college market, set to debut in August, offering more than 3,000 magazines and books via its UNITY platform.

UNITY enables users to access content online or offline on PCs, iPhones, and iPads, and the parties said the digital newsstand will be branded with “Powered by Zinio,” and NACS members promoting the site will be able to partake in revenue-sharing arrangements.

Zinio’s partners include Hearst, Bonnier, IDG, Hachette Filipacchi, McGraw-Hill, Rogers Media, and Wenner Media.

Zinio global executive vice president and chief marketing officer Jeanniey Mullen also announced the debut of USTA Magazine on its platform, the new issue of National Geographic Traveler, the July 15 release of VIVmag‘s spa issue, and the upcoming debut of Rolling Stone‘s top 500 songs of all-time, which will allow users to listen to iTunes previews of each song and purchase them.

NMS president Ed Schlichenmayer said:

In today’s world, digital is increasingly the format of choice for college students. The NACS digital newsstand is an exciting development that we believe will acquaint, or reacquaint, students with an amazing selection of content. This is a true opportunity for college stores in that it will be an intuitive offering for our members’ core customers.

Zinio founder, president and CEO Richard Maggiotto added:

Zinio is committed to extending the new era in digital publishing to the broadest possible audience. Our partnership with NACS Media Solutions is a natural fit. This is a highly mobile, technologically savvy audience that is incredibly comfortable with digital content. The platforms and reading habits of the college market makes it perfect for a digital newsstand. We expect very positive results from our collaboration with NACS and NMS.

And NMS vice president for strategy and development Mark Nelson concluded:

Digital publishing is growing at lightning speed, and for college bookstores, digital magazines and books directed specifically at college students are still vastly undersupplied categories. NMS is excited to take part in a solution that enables students to easily purchase books and magazines designed specifically for consumption on all of their digital devices, whether in the dorm or on the move.
