YouTube Spotlight Gives Users Their 15 Minutes Of Fame

At the end of last month YouTube announced that they had increased the maximum video upload length from ten minutes to fifteen minutes and today, to celebrate the upgrade, the video site is spotlighting users to give them their fifteen minutes of fame. YouTubers that have uploaded videos that use the entire fifteen minute time frame and have tagged their videos with “yt15mnutes” are being showcased today in YouTube’s Spotlight: 15 Minutes of Fame.

When YouTube announced that the upload limit was being increased they told YouTubers to take advantage by making their own videos of their “15 minutes of fame.” They described the assignment on their blog:

“Imagine that this video is all the world will ever know about you: what would you want to communicate? What will be the enduring stamp you’ve left on us all? Tag your video with “yt15minutes,” upload it by Wednesday, August 4, and we’ll select a handful of people to truly gain their 15 minutes of fame by featuring them on the YouTube homepage in a future spotlight.”

Well, today is the day. YouTube has chosen their handful of lucky users to spotlight and there really is some great talent and entertainment showcased. The videos include a 15-minute reel of hip hop dancer Stoney D’s dance moves, an amazing year-long time lapse video of Tokyo, a video about a 17-year old engineer that builds cool vehicles, and more. You can see all the submissions by searching YouTube for the yt15minutes tag.

I’m sure that lots of actors, singers, dancers, artists, animators, hobbyists and fame-hungry YouTubers are hitting themselves right now for not taking advantage of this opportunity. But the truth of the matter is, it’s hard to make a 15-minute video and, even more importantly, will online video viewers have the patience to sit through a 15-minute long YouTube clip? You be the judge. Check out a couple of our favorite picks from YouTube’s 15 Minutes of Fame project and let us know what you think. Is 15 minutes too long, or is it the perfect length for YouTubers to showcase their many talents?
