YouTube Paramount Deal Offers Hugo, Godfather, Transformers and More

Google announced this morning that YouTube’s rental service will now offer movies from Paramount — one of Viacom’s premier studios.  The deal will have YouTube offering movies such as the Huge, the Godfather trilogy and Transformers to the slate, and will certainly make YouTube a more powerful video service in the future.  This certainly shows that Google is pushing hard to create a complete library of entertainment, perhaps to sweeten the Google TV offer for prospective buyers — imagine your Google TV came with these movies free for a month.

The surprise here is that Viacom and Google are actually engaged in a legal battle in which Viacom has accused Google of “copyright infringement”.  The lawsuit has continued for nearly 5 years and is costing both parties time and resources.  I suspect a different team altogether is looking at the future of digital rentals and making deals happen while the legal folk battle it out.

Many of the films are already available, but you’ll also see some of these on Google Play in the near future.  Check out more at the official YouTube blog.
