Your Map App Could Get You a Ticket

Should we be able to use map apps on our cell phones while driving? A court case in California could set an important precedent for this sticky issue.

The issue comes down to motions–is a map app just as distracting as texting? Plenty of people drive with maps unfolded on the seat beside them or a GPS on the dashboard. Our sibling blog Social Times has more details about the case:

In California it’s illegal to use a mobile phone without a headset while driving. Steven Spriggs was pulled over and ticketed in January 2012 for using a map application on his smartphone while driving. He protested. The court found against him. He appealed. And at the end of March the appellate court found that Spriggs had in fact broken the law by looking at a map on his phone while driving.
