Eyewitness News has learned New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has suffered a massive heart attack. Steinbrenner was rushed to St. Joseph’s hospital in Tampa, Florida, and his condition is not known.

Bay News 9:

Bay News 9 has learned that Tampa Fire Rescue responded to a call at Steinbrenner’s house, and that someone was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital. There are unconfirmed reports that Steinbrenner was that patient.

Steinbrenner, 80, has owned the Yankees since 1973. During his tenure, the Yankees won 7 World Series titles.

UPDATE: NY1 is reporting, citing sources close to the Steinbrenner family, that Steinbrenner has died.

UPDATE: The Associated Press and the Daily News are also reporting that Steinbrenner has died. The Daily News said he passed away at around 6:30 a.m.
