XDA Developers Provide Netflix Build That Installs On More Android Phones

Netflix recently became available for Android phones, but unfortunately, it is only available for five different phones. If you have a phone other than the HTC Incredible, HTC Nexus One, HTC EVO 4G, HTC G2, and Samsung Nexus S, you can try a build of Netflix that has been made available on the XDA Developer’s forum. The build does not require you to root your phone, but unfortunately, based on messages posted in the forum, it also doesn’t work on all phones.

The build has been customized to remove the device check. In order to install it on your phone, you will first need to allow apps from unknown sources be installed by tapping Menu, Settings, Applications. I tried installing the build on my HTC Flyer tablet, which has a perfect size screen for watching movies, but it does not play the video of the movies.

After installing the app and logging in, I am able to browse the Netflix catalog and select movies to play. When they start to play I can hear the audio, but all I see is a white screen. Hopefully, some time in the near future Netflix will make a version of their Android app available for the Flyer, and other Android tablets. Installing the app doesn’t appear to cause any harm to your device, and I simply uninstalled it after finding out it did not work. You can browse the thread in the XDA Developers Forum to see whether others have installed it on your phone model or have reported problems.
