World Cup Final Sets Twitter Marks

Twitter said Spain’s 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in the championship game of 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa marked “the largest period of sustained activity for an event in Twitter’s history.”

Spokesman Matt Graves wrote on the Twitter Blog that Tweets per second reached 3,051 when Spain scored the winning goal, averaging 2,000 during the game’s final 15 minutes.

Graves wrote:

During the final, people from 172 countries Tweeted in 27 different languages.

At the moment of the winning goal, people from 81 countries Tweeted in 23 different languages.
