Windows Phone Shipped vs. Sold Numbers & Where Are the Apps?

Microsoft generally chooses words for press releases very carefully. So, were 1.5 million Windows Phones sold in the first 6 weeks as some articles and blog reported? Let’s take a closer look at what was said in the press release:

Windows Phone 7 Sales Off to a Promising Start, First Step in a New Era of Mobile

We are pleased that phone manufacturers sold over 1.5 million phones in the first six weeks

This is the number of units shipped from the manufacturers to carriers. This is not the number bought by phone wielding end users like you and me. So, we still don’t know what actual customers sales numbers look like.

we have more than 4,000 apps in our marketplace

Naturally, there is a lot of catch up to play in terms of raw Windows Phone app numbers.

We have 18,000 developers who are developing for our marketplace

This number causes me to worry a bit. While many apps are the result of a large team of developers and graphic designers, 4.5 to 1 ratio of developers to available apps is not a good one. Developers and development teams should be cranking out more apps. And, I’m not seeing many interesting new apps when I visit the Windows Phone market from time to time.
