Widow to Auction Off Late Hubby’s Wine

The late R.W. Apple Jr., political writer for The New York Times, was known for his larger than life appetite for food and drink. Today WaPo’s J. Freedom Du Lac writes about Apple’s wife, Betsey, who plans to soon auction off her husband’s wine, many of them fancy bottles at that. She is expected to receive five figures.

But it won’t be without grief.

“Some of the bottles take on a really particularly sort of heart-tugging,” she says in the story. “But I’m going to be a grown-up and move on. Inanimate objects shouldn’t take on such a strong life of their own. I have to deal with reality and not memories.”

Apple Jr. died in 2006 from thoraic cancer.
