The World Health Organization teamed up with WhatsApp on a new WHO Health Alert for users of the Facebook-owned messaging application.
WhatsApp users can save the number +41 79 893 1892 into their phone contacts and text the word “Hi” in a WhatsApp message to begin receiving alerts, or they can visit the WhatsApp Coronavirus Hub, which was rolled out earlier this week, and click on the WHO link.
Information provided in the WHO Health Alert includes tips on protecting yourself from infection, travel advice and debunking myths about the coronavirus pandemic.
WhatsApp said the WHO Health Alert will debut in English, with Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish to be added in the coming weeks.
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a release, “Digital technology gives us an unprecedented opportunity for vital health information to go viral and spread faster than the pandemic, helping us save lives and protect the vulnerable. We are proud to have partners like Facebook and WhatsApp, which are supporting us in reaching billions of people with important health information.”
