Where’s the LUV? Southwest Airlines Kicks Passenger Off Flight for Tweeting


In most circumstances, love (or LUV, Southwest Airlines’ NYSE Symbol after its home airport Love Field) does go a long way. In the case of Minnesota resident Duff Watson, it got him kicked off the plane.

According to his hometown CBS affiliate WCCO, Watson was asked to leave a Southwest Airlines flight from Denver to Minneapolis because he allegedly threatened the safety of an agent via Twitter. His tweet called out an agent by name, gave her the distinctive title “rudest agent in Denver,” and directed it at @SouthwestAir shortly before takeoff.

The complaint didn’t work out the way he planned.

Here’s the reason Watson was kicked off the plane, from what he recounted to WCCO:

“Something to the effect of, ‘Wow, rudest agent in Denver. Kimberly S, gate C39, not happy @SouthwestAir,’” Watson said.


Apparently, the squabble between the agent and the “A-List” passenger revolved around Watson’s two children, who were told that they could not take advantage of the same priority boarding benefits that he could.

“In leaving I said, you know, ‘Real nice way to treat an A-list. I’ll be sure to tweet about it.’”

He was a man of his word, and within minutes, he and his two kids were asked to get off the plane. Watson doesn’t recall any profanity or threats exchanged. Sure, tempers were flared–but name a day that doesn’t happen in a crowded airport.

“She said, ‘You can’t board the plane unless you delete that tweet.'”

He did, but the #PRFail had only just begun. In an email to Yahoo Travel, Southwest had a “response” to this situation:

“On Sunday, July 20, a Customer was removed for a short time from flight #2347 from Denver to Minneapolis. He later continued on flight #2347 to Minneapolis. The incident is currently under review.”

And for his troubles, Watson and both of his children were given a $50 voucher. Each. Someone on eBay may show those some love tomorrow.
