WhatsApp Saw a Record-Breaking 75 Billion Messages Sent on New Year’s Eve

Video calling was one of the app's most popular features from 2017

WhatsApp announced that users around the world sent 75 billion messages on New Year’s Eve 2017, including more than 13 billion images and 5 billion videos. This makes New Year’s Eve the platform’s biggest messaging day ever.

This figure includes all messages sent on Dec. 31 between midnight and 11:59 p.m. PST.

The Facebook-owned messaging application also revealed its five most popular features from 2017.

Finally, WhatsApp said its Status feature has more than 300 million daily users. The feature officially launched in February 2017.

New Year’s Eve was also a popular event with Facebook Live users, with more than 10 million livestreaming on the platform that day, a 47 percent increase from 2016.
