Watching them watch us, LA Weekly edition

Hidden deep within the enormously thick LA Weekly annual ‘Best of LA’ edition (about which I’ll have more to say later), Steven Mikulan catches the Fishbowl spirit and catalogs some of the sillier things the New York Times has said about LA in recent years. My favorite is from March 1, 1996:

In a city where it is socially declasse to walk farther than a Frisbee can be thrown, the mall department store is de rigueur… That’s why Southern Californians tend to take their cues from department stores, where an entire look is put together in one place.

Um, okay. Does Fred Segal count as a department store?
