Washington Post Outlines Hiring, Expansion Plans

After losing Ezra Klein, paper puts a focus on blogs

The Washington Post has made headlines lately for the high-profile departure of Wonkblogger Ezra Klein. The Post hasn't been sitting still, though; it's made some hires of its own in the wake of that news, and in a memo today, executive editor Marty Baron detailed plans to further increase the headcount.

"This will be a year of impressive investment in The Washington Post, with the primary goals of growth and digital transformation," Baron wrote.

The Post declined to say exactly how many newsroom staffers would be added this year, all told. But the hiring plans run counter to trends at the Post, which has slashed the size of its newsroom staff by more than 200 through buyouts in recent years.

Baron's hiring plans seem to focus on the explainer type of journalism that Klein made popular. On the heels of hiring Adam Kushner, Fred Barbash and Jim Tankersley, Baron said the Post would be building out Kushner's and Tankersley's online commentary and analysis and public policy writing staffs, respectively. Recent additions have been made to the politics reporting desk, and five more staffers are slated to be added this year. In addition, the paper plans to hire another staffer to produce Reliable Source video.

The Post, which was sold to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos last fall, has launched a number of blogs in the past year like The Switch and GovBeat, and Baron said it would be hiring more writers and other staffers for those blogs.

The Post’s overall site will be launching a redesign, which will also involve new hires.  

Baron’s planned initiatives aren’t limited to digital. This spring, he said the paper will be expanding its Sunday magazine, making it bigger in dimension and number of pages, with new features; and introducing a new Sunday Style & Arts section.
