Walmart, Nextdoor Want to See Neighbors Helping Neighbors

People can request or offer assistance with shopping for groceries, medications and other essentials

Retail giant Walmart teamed up with neighborhood social network Nextdoor on the Neighbors Helping Neighbors program.

Nextdoor members across the country can either request assistance with shopping for essential items at Walmart during the coronavirus pandemic or offer to help others in their community do so.

The program enables vulnerable community members to coordinate pickup and delivery of groceries, medications and other essentials, contact-free, with neighbors who were already planning shopping trips to Walmart.

Nextdoor members who wish to volunteer can do so by clicking on the Groups tab in Nextdoor for desktop or its Android or iOS applications, where they will see Walmart stores in their area and their hours of operation pinned to the top of their page.

They can then share a message in the group feed indicating that they wish to help and, once members connect, they can work on the details on the message board or via direct messages.

The two companies said people are encouraged to use contact-free payment options and delivery methods.

Nextdoor said it has seen the number of people joining groups on its platform to help one another rise by seven times over the past few weeks.

Walmart chief customer officer Janey Whiteside added, “I’ve seen first-hand the countless ways our Walmart team is working together during this challenging time, leading with humanity, compassion and understanding to serve our customers. We’re continuing to do that through our new program with Nextdoor. We’re connecting neighbors to each other so that more members of our communities have access to essential items, while limiting contact and the number of people shopping in our stores.”
