W Brings On Contributing Entertainment Editor

W magazine has hired Janice Simpson, a former assistant managing editor for Time magazine, as contributing entertainment editor.

In addition to her work as a writer and editor — she has previously worked for The Wall Street Journal, Essence and Woman’s Day as well as Time — Simpson also teaches arts reporting at the City University of New York’s Graduate School of Journalism and runs a theatre blog Broadway & Me.

Janice C. Simpson has been named Contributing Entertainment Editor of W magazine, it was announced today by Patrick McCarthy, Chairman and Editorial Director of W magazine and Fairchild Fashion Group, a division of Condee Nast Publications. Her appointment is effective immediately.

Ms. Simpson is a former assistant managing editor of TIME magazine. Previously she held the position of senior editor of the magazine’s Arts & Media section. She has worked at such publications as The Wall Street Journal, Essence, and Woman’s Day writing breaking news stories and feature articles.

Ms. Simpson continues to teach arts reporting at the City University of New York’s Graduate School of Journalism while blogging bi-weekly for the site she created, Broadway & Me. She is a member of the Advisory Committee of the American Theatre Wing, which administers the Tony Awards, as well as a member of the Outer Critics Circle and the Independent Theater Bloggers Association.

“Jan is a talented editor with an instinct for great story ideas and will be an invaluable asset to our magazine,” said Mr. McCarthy.

Ms. Simpson graduated with a B.A. in liberal arts from Sarah Lawrence College and was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism where she later served as a member of the editorial board of the Columbia Journalism Review. She lives in New York City with her husband.
