Vox Media Buys Re/code

Website buys website.

Vox Media is buying Re/code, the tech site overseen by Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher. According to The New York Times, it is an all-stock deal and Mossberg and Swisher will stay on after the merger.

Mossberg and Swisher—the founders of The Wall Street Journal’s All Things D—branched off from Dow Jones in 2014 in order to launch Re/code.

As for how Vox plans to deal with the overlap of its own tech site — The Verge — with Re/code, well, things are a bit murky. In a statement on Re/code, Mossberg and Swisher noted that there was no need to worry because “We have focused on the business of tech, while The Verge has focused on covering tech from a lifestyle perspective.”

While that may be true, changes are likely coming to Re/code. For starters, the site currently employs 44 full-time staffers and three contract staffers. With Vox already having The Verge, it would make sense to trim some of the fat from Re/code. Fingers crossed that we’re wrong about that.
