Peter Gerard, founder and CEO of Distrify, is leaving to join Vimeo as director of audience development and content operations. This comes as Vimeo is increasing its efforts in original programming.

Gerard is a natural fit for the online video platform, which is more focused on indie fare compared to the more mainstream content of YouTube. He has directed and produced a number of independent documentaries, and founded Distrify as a way to help independent filmmakers with distribution and marketing.

Vimeo recently made its first foray into original programming with “High Maintenance,” a web series about a New York City weed dealer. While the show has been funded by its creators up until this point, the video-streaming platform announced that it would finance upcoming episodes.

Emily Nussbaum, TV critic for The New Yorker, lamented the state of indie online productions, but had praise for the series: “Freed of the constraints of thirty-minute or one-hour formulas, the episodes are luxurious and twisty and humane, radiating new ideas about storytelling.”
