Video-Sharing Bill Now Up to Obama

Netflix plans to launch feature next year

It's now up to President Obama to sign into law a new measure that will allow consumers to share what movies or TV shows they watched on social media platforms. The measure passed the Senate Thursday, days after the House passed the same bill.

The bill amends the Video Privacy Protection Act to allow sharing as long as companies obtain consent from consumers and provide them with the ability to opt out at any time.

Netflix, which lobbied heavily for changes to the 1998 law, should be thrilled, as it clears the way for the company to launch a sharing feature on Facebook that is has already introduced in other countries.

"We are pleased the Senate has moved quickly to modernize the VPPA, giving consumers more freedom to share with friends when they want.
