Verizon Customers Complain About Data Limits On Twitter

At the JPMorgan Technology, Media and Telecom conference held in Boston today, attendees learned that Verizon plans to do away with unlimited data plans.

And as word spreads through the Interwebs, folks are voicing their displeasure on Twitter.

This may seem a bit confusing as Verizon stopped selling unlimited data plans last summer (following AT&T’s lead, which stopped selling unlimited data plans in 2010), so how is this new?

CNN tells us that Fran Shammo, chief financial officer for Verizon Communications, made an announcement at the Telcom conference today that went a little something like this:

“As you come through an upgrade cycle and you upgrade in the future, you will have to go onto the data share plan,” Shammo said, “[We’re] moving away from, if you will, the unlimited world and moving everybody into a tiered structure data share-type plan.”

So no more unlimited data for anyone, at all. But what about grandfathered accounts? Surely they’ll still have unlimited data? Verizon says, “no soup for you!” (Meaning, no – you don’t get unlimited data either, grandpa.)

Although Shammo is said to have emphasized that the plan is “paper, not actual,” it sounds pretty “paper” to customers hearing it. And they’ve taken to Twitter, like the greedy little data users they are, to complain:


So now the only two “unlimited” plans left standing belong to T-Mobile and Sprint. T-Mobile’s “unlimited data plan” slows down once users gobble up 2GBs so THAT isn’t very fantastic . . . or unlimited really. That leaves Sprint as the only bastion of truly unbridled, unlimited data happiness in existence. We wonder if it will last long enough for those of us stuck in expensive contracts with the others to make the switch.
