Vanity Fair Cover Playfully Snookers Bill de Blasio

Score one for Michael M. Grynbaum. The New York Times City Hall bureau chief was the first to write about some weird truncated text adorning the red ball on the left.

While we’re at it, score one also for both VF spokesperson Beth Kseniak and de Blasio rep Rebecca Katz. Via email, they respectively joked that this is what you get for letting Kim Kardashian guest edit a magazine’s cover lines and that the fully completed billiard ball text in fact spells out not “Bill de Blasio Sex Tape!” but rather “Bill de Blasio Spandex Cape!”

Gawker’s J.K. Trotter separately noticed something else. For the British version of the January 2015 VF issue, the billiard cover target appears to be none other than the magazine’s London editor Henry Porter. Vanity Fair may have hit on something here, as we imagine some folks would be willing to pay a sponsorship premium to be winked at in similar cover manner. Call it Native Goofing.
