Utne Reader Sold To Hippie Mag Collective

utne_reader_sold.jpgWe’ve always had a soft spot for the Utne Reader, which has continued to espouse the healthy living and indie idealism that we’ve surrendered through our association with dirty martinis, real estate agents and Web sites run by Nick Denton. Founded by Eric Utne in 1984, the bi-monthly magazine is a compendium of what it considers the best articles in the alternative press, and has continued to inspire hippies and vegans across the country from it’s Minneapolis offices, oblivious to our decline.

Today the mag announced that it was bought out by Ogden publications, which publishes a lot of similarly patchouli-scented titles like Mother Earth News, Natural Home, Herbs for Health and the Herb Companion. The deal, terms of which were not disclosed, makes Ogden “the largest and most influential media company in the conscientious lifestyles and environmental awareness fields,” said Bryan Welch, publisher of Ogden Publications in a statement accompanmying the press release.

Chairman and chief executive officer Nina Rothschild Utne will become editor-at-large, and the July/August issue will be Ogden’s first.
