Update To Gmail for Android May Be In The Works

According to PocketNow, an update to Gmail for Android (version 2.2.1) has been leaked, and there is a link to it at XDA-Developers.com. The major change appears to be moving the message header to the top of the screen, and the reply, reply to all, and forward actions are consolidated in a pop-up menu that appears when you press a button at the top of the screen where the message header is located. The changes described by PocketNow sound right for a .1 release. The Android 2.2 software that I have on my Nexus One currently has Version 2.2 of Gmail. The changes are not significant, but what I do find significant is the possibility that Google will be updating Gmail as a separate product. You may recall that at the beginning of the year there was much talk about the fragmentation of Android. Too many phones were on the market with different versions of Android. At the time Google said one way they were going to address the problem is by decoupling Android's standard apps, like Gmail, so that updates to those apps could be released individually. By doing that Google would enable users to get the latest features of the core apps, regardless of what version of Android they were running. A separate release of Gmail for Android sounds consistent with what Google said earlier in the year, except that according to PocketNow, the version posted at XDA-Developers requires Android 2.2. If Google is truly planning to release Gmail 2.2.1 as a separate update, but it only runs on Android 2.2, I don't understand how that addresses the fragmentation problem, instead it seems to me to make it worse.
