Unions Could Benefit from Awareness Push

While state and local employee unions have made tough choices in response to “economic realities of their state,” they need to communicate their activities more clearly with the public, a Forbes story suggests. Citing lack of awareness and Google-ability of the specific contributions unions make, Forbes‘ Rick Ungar argues that the public could use a reminder of the role unions play in their lives, even if they themselves are not members.

So what’s a union to do? Ungar says take a page from the NFL Players Association’s playbook.

“These are the folks that bring you the many television spots showing their members spending quality time with kids in hospitals, schools and other such community related endeavors,” he writes. “Run a Google search on the player association and you’ll see example after example of what these people are doing to help their respective communities.”
