Twitter: More than 60 Percent of Accounts from Outside of U.S.

More than 60 percent of Twitter accounts are from outside of the United States, with Twitter.com available in six languages, Matt Sanford, the lead engineer for Twitter’s international team, posted on the Twitter Blog.

Sanford wrote:

We made Twitter.com available in Spanish in November 2009 and saw an immediate 50 percent boost in sign-ups from Spanish-speaking countries. In the days following the tragic Chilean earthquake, people turned to Twitter to establish much-needed lines of communication. Sign-ups spiked 1,200 percent, and nearly all of those were using Spanish as their language.
