Twilight in Baltimore?

The Baltimore City Paper hears that company-wide buy-outs may be looming at the Sun following the scheduling of a Friday meeting between company execs and union officials:

“News of the meeting confirms rumors of staff reductions that swirled through the Baltimore newsroom late last week, following a meeting of managing editors convened by editor Tim Franklin. ‘The [editors] were basically told that major cuts were coming,’ according to a Sun source familiar with the situation.”

Everyone involved says that buy-outs are better than lay-offs, but no one is ruling one in and other out.

The latest news, of course, follows earlier signs that the Sun’s ability to “play above its weight” is lessening, including the closing of two of its foreign bureaus.
