Here are our top 10 Twitter stories of the week. 1. Guess What The World’s Most Active Twitter City Is? Back in August, we shared some super informative statistics on the world’s most-active-on-Twitter countries and cities. No surprise that the U.S., whose 141.8 million accounts represent 27.4% of all Twitter users, is the most active country on Twitter. But the most twitterific city? It’s a little bit of a curveball. 2. 100 Amazing Social Media Statistics, Facts And Figures [INFOGRAPHIC] Did you know that there are more devices connected to the internet than there are people on the entire planet? This global pipeline of data keeps the world connected, and nowhere is its presence is felt more strongly than in social media. Every minute of the day thousands of photos are shared on Instagram, tens of thousands of tweets are exchanged on Twitter, hours of YouTube videos are uploaded and hundreds of thousands of pieces of content are posted to Facebook. Twitter Now Valued At ‘More Than $11 Billion’, Eyes 2014 IPO In September of last year, CEO Dick Costolo told reporters not to expect a Twitter IPO anytime soon. “We now have what can only be referred to as a truckload of money in the bank. We did that because we want to be in control of our destiny and grow the company the way we want to,” he said. Fair enough. But 16 months is an eternity in the business world, certainly in tech, and with a string of new management hires, and a new report suggesting Twitter is now worth more than $11 billion, that IPO might be just around the corner. 5. Four Twitter Predictions For 2013 The past year saw the introduction of Twitter photo filters, brand new Twitter profiles including the platform’s first-ever cover photos, significant Twitter mobile app updates and more. 2012 was also contentious for Twitter. This year, Twitter put new restrictions on what it would allow third-party developers to do, and went to war with former ally Instagram over photo-sharing dominance of social media. What will 2013 bring for Twitter? 6. 16 Percent Of Customer Support Enquiries Now Come Via Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC] Did you know that 56 percent of customers who use social media to interact with an organisation say that they feel a stronger connection with that brand? Moreover, 50 percent are more likely to buy products or services from a company that they can contact via social media. But firms shouldn’t give up on traditional support methods just yet, as just one in six (16 percent) of customers use Facebook, Twitter and the other major social networks to interact with businesses. 7. Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr – Are Your Photos Getting Shared? [INFOGRAPHIC] If your business relies heavily upon (or generates a lot of) visual content, it’s important that you’re mindful to post your images to the social networks where they have the greatest chance of being seen and, critically, shared. For example, while 66 percent of adults use Facebook and 16 percent use Twitter, just 5 percent use Tumblr, but the latter is a veritable hotbed of image discovery and re-posts. Likewise, both Instagram (30 million photo-mad users) and Pinterest (with its predominately female demographic) offer unique attractions to marketers looking to maximise their social media ROI. 8. What Was Everybody Talking About On Twitter And Facebook In 2012? [INFOGRAPHIC] What were you talking about in 2012? The Superbowl, SOPA, KONY 2012, Facebook’s IPO and Instagram buyout, the iPhone 5, the London Olympics, Gangnam Style and the little matter of the U.S. Presidential election dominated social media reportage and conversation over the past twelve months, with all of these stories trending strongly across Twitter, Facebook and the other major social channels. 9. Social Marketing 101: Brands Are STILL Failing To Engage Fans And Customers [INFOGRAPHIC] Did you know that while 91 percent of online adults use social media regularly, just over one-fifth (22 percent) of businesses have a dedicated social media manager? Social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have changed the world, and brands are struggling to keep pace – just one-third (33 percent) of social media marketers spend more than eleven hours per week implementing their digital strategies, and, on average, companies respond to just 30 percent of all feedback they receive from their social media fans. 10. 10 Essential Apps To Enhance Your Mobile Twitter Experience Twitter was born as a mobile network. Back in July 2006, Jack Dorsey introduced the idea of creating an SMS (short message service, texting for example) that would allow users to communicate with a small group of people.
