Three Picks for LA Film Fest's Closing Weekend

Wow, time flies. The 10-day LA Film Festival is already winding down. This weekend is your last chance to check out the indie goodness. There are plenty of films to choose from. For those of you overwhelmed, here are a few of our picks for the final weekend. A Band Called Death -- This doc on the African-American protopunk band Death was so popular, festival organizers had to add a third screening. Glad they did, because you don't want to miss it. Not your typical punk doc. These guys are, quite literally, choir boys. And yet they were playing Ramones-style punk two years before the Ramones ever existed. The Burlington-based band was in LA for the first two screening. Hopefully they're sticking around for the third. Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and The Farm Midwives -- The history of the modern American home birthing movement as told through the story of Ina May Gaskin and her Farm commune. Haven't seen this one yet, but it was recommended to us by a Swiss filmmaker making her own doc on midwives. She gleefully recommended this film with only the slightest twitch of jealousy. So it must be good. We're told it contains more live birthing scenes than one could ever expect to see. Ah, the miracle of life! Juan of the Dead -- If you've already seen A Band Called Death, this great Cuban Zombie flick is screening at the same time Saturday night. Like its timeslot rival, this film was also given an additional screening based on the tremendous audience response. Think Sean of the Dead, but with internal Cuban politics juxtaposed over a critique of the British suburbs.
