This Week In Viral Videos – July 16, 2010

Friday has arrived, and with it our picks for best viral videos of the week. This week’s selection is headed up by Old Spice, who conducted one of the biggest and most successful social media campaigns of all time this week. However, that’s not all. We’ve also got some great Star Wars clips for you this week, along with a song about a psychic octopus and one of the most amazing animations you’ll ever see. Watch all the videos after the jump and enjoy!

Old Spice Response Campaign

A little over a week ago, Old Spice released yet another funny Isiah Mustafa clip – this time he’s on a boat with an awesome moustache. The video took off, with over 1.4 million views so far. However, the brand stole its own thunder when they launched an insane social video campaign on Tuesday, posting over 180 YouTube video responses, personally dedicated to specific fans. The campaign received a total of 5.9 million views in two short days. Talk about a success.
We are going to step a little bit outside the usual bounds of ‘This Week In Viral Videos’ by sharing a few videos from the campaign with you, rather than just one. Check out the videos below, which account for some of the most popular clips in the 2-day campaign.

Star Wars Subway Car

Improv Everywhere strikes again – this time with a reenactment of Star Wars on a New York subway car. On the Improv Everywhere website, the group writes, “The white walls and sliding doors on the train reminded us of the rebel ship from the movie, and we thought it would be fun to see how people would react to a surprise appearance by the iconic characters.” The reactions of the passengers on the train are priceless, and YouTubers seem to be loving the clip as well. It has been viewed just under 975,000 times since it was uploaded on the 13th.

Yoda Recording for Tom Tom GPS

Improv Everywhere wasn’t the only group with a Star Wars video that went viral this week. An ad for the Tom Tom GPS, which is letting users get directions in the voices of their favorite Star Wars characters has also gotten hundreds of thousands of views this week. The ad features Yoda recording his voice for the Tom Tom device. Sufficed to say, he isn’t the easiest guy to work with.

Paul The Octopus Song

Have you heard about Paul The Octopus? This German octopus achieved notoriety by correctly predicting the outcome of World Cup games. YouTube user ParryGripp uploaded a song about Paul a week ago and it has garnered 476,000 views this week. Do you love Paul the octopus? We do!

Earlier this week, a new wall-painted animation by artist BLU hit the web. This animation is epic, at nearly ten minutes long, and provides “an unscientific point of view on the beginning and evolution of life…and how it could probably end.” The video has just over 1 million views on Vimeo so far, and is still spreading fast. Watch the video below, and prepare to be blown away.
