The undead hordes are back once again in Zombie Gunner

Zombie Gunner is a new iOS game from Gamevil. It's available now as a free download from the App Store, and carries a variety of in-app purchases for in-game currency and special items. In Zombie Gunner, players are cast in the role of Andrew, a Duke Nukem-style character whose daughter Lisa has been kidnapped by the undead hordes. By working his way through a series of increasingly difficult challenges, Andrew will grow in strength and be able to take on a variety of different decomposing enemies on his quest to save his daughter. Basic gameplay in Zombie Gunner takes place on a flat plane. Andrew may walk left and right using a virtual thumbstick on the left side of the screen, and fire in any direction using another stick on the right. Andrew is not limited to simply firing left or right, and in fact some enemies require that he fire at peculiar angles in order to hit them. Different weapons also work in different ways and have varying amounts of power against different types of enemy, so it will be up to the player to determine the best item for each given situation. Special weapons also only have limited ammunition, so Andrew will find himself having to fall back on either his pistol or his punch attack if he runs out. Between levels, players are able to use earned in-game currency to upgrade Andrew with a variety of items. The cheapest items include consumables such as ammunition, health potions and bombs. Also available are "friends," companion characters that offer various benefits; special weapons; powerful machines such as tanks; and player upgrades such as increased health, speed, stamina and the like. Many items are quite expensive when compared to the amount of "income" a player receives for completing an individual level, so in-app purchases of currency (which range between $0.99 and $99.99) are arguably a necessity to progress beyond a certain point. A series of "packages" are available for in-app purchase, also, including increases to maximum ammunition ($0.99); an increase to the maximum number of recovery potions ($2.99); an increase to the maximum number of bombs ($4.99); a larger increase to maximum ammunition ($4.99); and a pack of two thousand potions ($9.99). Zombie Gunner certainly has the potential to get expensive if players are not careful -- though the early stages of the game at least appear to be perfectly playable without spending a cent. Zombie Gunner is a perfectly competent game with good audio-visual presentation -- it's just not very interesting. Beyond the fact that it is yet another zombie-themed game, of which there are already hundreds on the App Store, here's not a lot of variety in the gameplay beyond walking left and right and shooting various types of undead -- occasionally, things are mixed up with the necessity to flee a rolling boulder or rescue civilians, but for the most part, it's about taking on increasingly-difficult odds and tapping the fire button as much as possible. As such, it's a title that is really only for those who have exhausted all the possibilities of the other games on their iOS device. Zombie Gunner is not yet ranked on the App Store leaderboards.
