“Twttr” first opened its doors as an employee-only platform on March 21, 2006, when co-founder Jack Dorsey famously wrote “just setting up my twttr”, the first-ever tweet.

The service launched to the public in July 2006, and later rebranded as “Twitter”. The first hashtag was used in August 2007, and the site passed one million users the following year.

In early 2010 Twitter was seeing 50 million tweets every day, which exploded to 140 million within 13 months.
