The Standard Hotel Is NOT Happy About That Solange/Jay-Z Video Leak

Standard Hotel, July 2009

We admit to having little interest in the day’s hottest celebrity video leak. Something about seeing people in their most intimate moments–even at strange, distorted angles–creeps us out a bit, which is why we won’t link to it here. Also: we have a feeling that everyone who wants to watch it has already done so.

But this is a story fit for Olivia Pope. It’s rare for any establishment to get so much press in the tabloids on a single day (even a place that all but begs for attention).

The official statement from The Standard Hotel‘s rep to MSNBC’s The Grio after the jump.

“We are shocked and disappointed that there was a clear breach of our security system and the confidentiality that we count on providing our guests. We are investigating with the utmost urgency the circumstances surrounding the situation and, as is our customary practice, will discipline and prosecute the individuals involved to our fullest capacity.”

Now, we don’t want to speculate. But this does look a whole hell of a lot like someone on the hotel’s internal staff saw the video, realized that it might just be worth some money, and visited TMZ’s “hot tips” (AKA Kris Jenner’s homepage).

So the statement makes perfect sense.

While some celebrities might think twice about staying in The Standard knowing that their elevator encounters might not be as private as they think, something tells us that this incident could make the place more popular among the see-and-be-seen crowd.

Prior to the story breaking, the hotel was best known for two things:

  • Its controversial design
  • A reputation for voyeurism so strong that it inspired 12 Years a Slave Director Steve McQueen to set scenes from his Michael Fassbender sex-addict drama Shame in the same building (probably NSFW video here)

So what we’re saying is: this is kind of a mixed bag for the Standard. It also allows for a flashback to this classic 2009 stunt, originally posted on the hotel’s own blog:

“Now, we’re asking YOU, our Stan D’elovely amateur pornographers to send in your most erotic photos shot at The Standard, New York. You can email them to us, or you can upload them directly to our Facebook page by tagging the pictures The Standard, New York. Whatever you do, just make sure the shots are HOT and that you get them to us in whichever way you can. It’s all about sex all the time, and you’re our star. Cum on over.”

Now that amused us far more than it should have.
