The New York Times, Betaworks Prepping Personalized News Service

NewsMeHoneycomb.jpgThe New York TimesBits did a little investigative reporting, and its subject was The New York Times, as Bits reported that its newspaper parent and Betaworks are developing personalized news service

Betaworks CEO John Borthwick told Bits has been in the hopper for six months, adding that it will debut as an app for the iPad, with a Web version possible somewhere down the road.

Borthwick told Bits, “We’re building something wonderful and amazing in the social news space,” and The New York Times Co. vice president of research and development Michael Zimbalist added:

We’re abstracting from (studying and monitoring trends on the Web and in social media) a vision of how social sharing and the real-time Web are going to influence the news-consumption experience. We decided to develop a prototype that we thought was illustrative of where the world was heading. From the Times‘ perspective, we think this is a really interesting way for a company like ours to foster an entrepreneurial culture through a start-up.
