The MTV Video Music Awards and Its Performers Heated Up Facebook in August

MTV’s Video Music Awards and VMA performers Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Missy Elliott were the hottest Hot Topics on Facebook in August, according to Facebook IQ, while Instagrammers bid farewell to summer and talked up Labor Day.

Star Wars also performed strongly in the entertainment category on Facebook, while Eid al-Adha did so in the holidays and events category on Instagram. D23 drew conversation in the holidays and events category on Facebook, while entertainment fans on Instagram also discussed the VMA performers mentioned above, as well as Disney.

As for sports, the National Football League dominated Facebook talk for the month, with the Dallas Cowboys, the surprisingly retired Andrew Luck and Ezekiel Elliott standing out.

Two people who passed away during August, novelist Toni Morrison and actress Valerie Harper, led the people category on Facebook, and Morrison did so on Instagram, as well.

The Samsung Galaxy paced brands and products chatter on Facebook, while Instagrammers talked about the Rainforest Alliance.

And in the food and drink category, Instagrammers gulped down Heineken, while kombucha and espresso were the beverages of choice on Facebook.

Facebook IQ measured subjects that drove disproportionately high volumes of discussion on both social platforms, marking the latest in a Facebook-Adweek Hot Topics monthly series that began in 2015.
