The inscrutable logic of celebrity magazine cover sales figures

I’m honestly unsure why, say, a Reese Witherspoon cover didn’t help sell many magazines this year, while Britney Spears did. But I’m skeptical of Media Industry Newsletter’s all-caps generalization that “BAD” GIRLS AND THINNER GIRLS SELL BETTER THAN OSCAR WINNERS. Is best-seller Jessica Simpson really considered a ‘bad girl?’Isn’t underseller Hilary Swank awful thin? (I kind of hate myself for even wondering about things like these, but it comes with the job.)
