The Economist Seeks Facebook Fans, Twitter Followers

TheEconomistLogo.jpgThe Economist wants to reach 500,000 Facebook fans badly. How badly? The publication is willing to spend “tens of thousands of pounds” to do so, Inside Facebook reports.

Facebook Connect will be integrated on the home page for The Economist, which is also attempting to collect 750,000 Twitter followers, according to Inside Facebook. The Economist currently has 182,618 Facebook fans, and Inside Facebook reports that it has fewer than 94,000 Twitter followers.

Economist.com publisher Ben Edwards told sister publication The Financial Times he hopes that Facebook will help his site to acquire new readers and develop a “deeper level of engagement” with existing ones, adding that the site will undergo a relaunch in 3-4 months.
