Tagged, the social network that specializes in helping people meet others, recently announced the acquisition of WeGame, a San Francisco based game discovery startup. Tagged has been hosting social games for quite some time and this acquisition signifies their continued emphasis on keeping users around through social game discovery. More after the jump.

Tagged’s interest in WeGame lies in the fact that the company has created a compelling social gaming and discovery business. Tagged’s CEO Greg Tseng believes their creative direction and expert execution will help further accelerate their growth trajectory at Tagged.

Founded in 2007, WeGame has emerged as a unique social gaming discovery service that makes gaming experiences easier to discover and share. Users can download hundreds of games, take screenshots and share via Tagged, Facebook, and Twitter. Tagged will reveal more about how they intend to utilize WeGame’s technology in the coming months. Until then, WeGame users can continue using the client as usual.

“Joining Tagged offers us an opportunity to tackle the social discovery and games space on a larger scale,” said WeGame CEO and founder Jared Kim. “Both companies understand and are energized by enabling more people to discover, meet, share and play online. The WeGame team is excited about the prospect of reaching and improving social options for Tagged’s more than 100 million users.”

Tagged already offers a plethora of social games that aid as ice breakers in meeting new people. So, how exactly will WeGame make Tagged appeal to more users? Tagged could be trying to capture the attention of hardcore gamers, which, for the most part has been an untapped demographic in the social gaming realm. WeGame supports many games that attract a ton of loyal hardcore followers, such as Rift and World of Warcraft.

Tagged is continuously searching for new ways to stand out and compete in a market dominated by Facebook and Google+. Tagged is different, however, as its about meeting new people and playing games with others similar to experiences delivered by Hi5 and MyYearbook which was recently nabbed by QuePasa. In fact, WeGame is not their only acquisition this year. In April, Tagged acquired Digsby, a popular multi-protocol instant messaging client. And last month we covered the launch of their new mobile site as well as the new features to their iPhone and Android apps. It should be exciting to see the byproduct of these big moves.
